Local Marriage Customs.
Marriages in this district usually take
place during the period between Christmas and Lent which is called "the Shrove" and also between Easter and Advent.
May is considered an unlucky month
to get married in. Friday is an unlucky
day. No one ever gets married or does
anything important on "the odd day of the year" which is supposed to be the day of the week on which the 28th of December falls. The odd day of this year is Wednesday.
Matches are made for the majority
of the marriages in this districts. When
a man wishes to marry, he sends
another man to ask the parents of the girl whom he thinks would make a
suitable wife for him. This man brings
a bottle of whiskey with him to the girl's house and treats everyone there. If the girl and her parents are agreeable, the man goes to their house or meets them at a local fair and they settle about the dowry, which is usually given in money, sometimes accompanied by cattle or sheep.
