  1. Long ago there lived a man who was very fond of money. He gathered a box of gold and used to carry it every where with him. He was getting old and he lost his sight. One day he told his son to row him out on the lake. As the son was leading him down to the boat he noticed that he was carrying the gold with him and guessed what he was up to. He rowed him back and forth by the edge of the lake. The old man asked him if they were far out on the lake. The son said they they were out on the deepest part. The old man slipped the gold into the water then. He thought the son did not see him but the son did. Then he told the son to bring him home and the son did so. He let on that he was pulling the boat up on the land but he waded out to the place where the gold was and got
